What NOT to expect from Board and Train programs

Board and Train at Superhero Dog Academy

Superhero Dog Academy's Board and Train program is an immersion dog training program where your dog can work on everything from crate training and puppy potty training, to more severe behavioral issues, like reactivity and dog aggression.

Our Academy is designed to mimic a home-based environment as much as possible. We have separate zones, a full kitchen, separate Classroom and some cozy couches to give your dog a break or train home-specific behaviors like counter surfing. We keep low student to teacher ratio of 1:4 to ensure your dog receives the one-on-one attention they deserve.

We are positive-reinforcement trainers. We focus on teaching the right behaviors, rather than correcting bad behaviors. We do NOT use aversive methods, like e-collars, pinch collars, leash pops, "alpha rolls" or any other methods that increase fear and anxiety for your dog. Because they simply don't work as well as positive reinforcement, and there is no need to hurt or intimidate our dogs!

**We use slip leads to safely move dogs from one area to another. We use low-stress handling techniques and lots of patience to ensure a positive experience for your dog. We never use slip leads as a training tool.

What NOT to expect from Board and Train programs

What NOT to expect from Board and Train programs

What NOT to expect from Board and Train programs

  • Instant results or a "perfect" dog. You'll still have to put time and effort into building a relationship with your dog and continuing their training
  • 24/7 attention: While we are staffed 24 hours a day, your dog will spend time (safely) alone during parts of their day
  • A pile of happy pups snuggling together at our feet. Most dogs come here because they have some behaviors to work on. Not all dogs get along, so we carefully monitor dogs' interactions. If some pups become happy friends, we integrate them during free play time

Pros of Board and Train programs

What to avoid when choosing a Board and Train program

What NOT to expect from Board and Train programs

  • Highly-skilled handlers teach more difficult tasks, so it is easier for owners to build on established skills
  • Less hands-on time required from owners with long work schedules
  • Immersion-style training establishes real life expectations
  • Turning your dog onto a "Green Light" system, so they recognize and tune into positive reinforcement training

Cons of Board and Train Programs

What to avoid when choosing a Board and Train program

What to avoid when choosing a Board and Train program

  • Your dog will learn how to follow an experienced handler but won't respond as well to you
  • You won't have the skills to maintain or continue their training
  • Stressful separation from their humans and home routine can make some dog behaviors issues worse
  • Expensive

What to avoid when choosing a Board and Train program

What to avoid when choosing a Board and Train program

What to avoid when choosing a Board and Train program

  • No E-collars, shock collars, pinch collars, leash pops: no boo-boos!
  • "Alpha"-style training: this is based on a, 80 year old flawed study of wolves that has been disproven for 40 years and recanted by the original researcher. Sometimes referred to as "Balanced" training
  • Dog Boot Camp style board and train programs. The name says it all
  • Large groups of dogs: this can be stressful and overwhelming for dogs with behavioral issues and may cause more harm than good
  • Lack of follow-up: your program should include more than a brief demonstration of what your dog learned. It is critical that you learn the skills to transfer that training to you. We don't offer board and train as a standalone service because we need to teach YOU how to be a dog trainer.
  • Guarantees: it is unethical to guarantee "perfect" results for a living, sentient creature.

What to look for in a R+ Positive reinforcement professional dog training company in Salt Lake City, UT. Positive reinforcement training should be lots of fun for you and your dog!

Obedience commands can be taught to dogs young and old (yes old dogs can learn new tricks!). Puppy training at 8 weeks can make good obedience skills for the life of your dog. Don't wait to start puppy training. Teach a puppy to stop biting. Don't let puppy biting become a fun game. If your puppy is biting, just walk away from them or place them in a safe area like a dog kennel or puppy playpen.  Puppy potty training and crate training go together. Make a potty routine. 8 week old puppies should be taken outside to go potty about every hour. After they go potty, puppies can have free play time! When your puppy is all tired out, give them a meal or some yummy treats or chews. Nap time!

Yes we can help with behavior issues!

Separation anxiety training should use desensitization and counterconditioning. Practice leaving in very small time increments. Give your dog enrichment activities to keep them busy while you are gone. Snuffle mats, silicone lick mats, Kongs, bones, chews, treat dispensing balls, or homemade dog puzzles can all stop dog from chewing or destroying the house.

Many dog owners struggle with dog aggression. Reactivity and aggression can look very similar. How can you tell if a dog is aggressive? Schedule a free consult with Superhero Dog Academy to help tell the difference between an excited dog, a fearful dog, and an aggressive dog.

Resource guarding is when a dog has something valuable, like a bowl of dog food, a bone or favorite toy that they are scared will be taken away. Resource guarding is the fear of losing something. Train resource guarding by offering lots of yummy treats while your dog enjoys their favorite item. Good timing is important for resource guarding so be sure to consult with a professional dog trainer.

Looking for a dog board and train in Salt Lake City Utah? We only use positive reinforcement WITHOUT e-collars! Boot camp sounds like no fun to us. We are Puppy Preschool teachers at Superhero Dog Academy! No Alphas around here, just really awesome Sidekick Humans.

Teach a puppy to fetch. We use fun games like fetch and positive reinforcement dog training to teach obedience like Stay, Come and Drop. Learn American Sign Language hand signs for dog obedience commands. Dogs respond better to visual cues like hand signs.
